“Charles & Maria at Heliotrope Digital as well as the rest of the team are fantastic. They are enthusiastic and feel more like an in-house team at Pets Lets rather than an agency. Highly recommend them!”
— Russell Hunt, Director, Pets Lets
“Great agency, very well informed with an international team. I engaged the company to undertake UX, workflow and database design. The team rapidly understood the business model and then produced well thought out design concepts, and were very responsive to feedback”
— Peter Cleland, Director, ZenCasa
If you’re looking to develop a new digital product in 2024, designing a good looking interface is important. But modern web design requires thinking through the user flow of every interaction alongside the business logic to ensure your product is a commercial success.
The first step of the MVP is creating a structural overview of features, dependencies, and navigation, which will guide product requirements, user flow, and UI design.
The initial step of UI design creation is to develop a UI kit. This is a collection of reusable UI components, templates, resources, and styles which makes the design process much more efficient. Then it’s time to begin the process of designs themselves; the look, feel, and interactivity of the product and draw individual screens. It’s also possible to turn these designs into a clickable prototype with Figma or Figma Mirror.
After the designs have been signed off, the development process can begin. This involves coding individual components, putting them together in the correct layout, and building the logic required for the product to function correctly.
There are many different types of testing, but at this stage we usually run end-to-end testing of the core functionality and hand over to the client for acceptance testing. User testing can also be carried out at this stage.
Spend plenty of time in the planning phase
As mentioned above, in a typical information systems project, over 80% of errors are introduced at the early stages. Less than 10% of errors are introduced in the development stage, yet most of the project time is devoted to development and testing. So it really cannot be overstated how important it is to work through this stage fully.
Get feedback from prospective users at every stage of the process
Usability testing relates to how real users interact with the platform. It involves setting a series of tasks for users to perform and recording their feedback. This can tell you where the kinks are in your interface. It’s never too early to get feedback from prospective users.
Always keep in mind the problem you are trying to solve and investigate it thoroughly
It is often the case that the initial problem you think you are trying to solve is only a superficial one. Workshops, interviews, surveys, buyer analysis, scenario analysis and prototyping are all great investigation techniques to get a better understanding of the real problem you are facing.
